Sample Letters for Representatives

You can use these templates to begin your letter to your U.S. Representative and Senators. Copy the text in the mono-spaced font into your e-mail program, taking care to change the names to that of you and your representative.

Please follow these rules to ensure that your letter will be read and considered:

Check your spelling and grammar.
Identify yourself as a resident of the representative’s district (or if outside of his or her district, explain why you are writing), so that they know you can vote for or against them during the next election.
Discuss only one subject per letter.
Identify the issue and the bill number in the first paragaph or two.
Be specific.

For U.S. Representatives

The Honorable John Doe
United States House of Representatives

Dear Representative Doe:

I would like to convince you to vote against H.R. 1234, since it would
waste many of my precious tax dollars.

Sincerely,

John Smith

For U.S. Senators
